Eat the rich is an abbreviation of Jean Jacques Rousseau’s words “When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.”

But today it’s a slogan that asks us to consider wealth inequalities of our contemporary era and more commonly used as an anti-capitalist rallying cry. The ‘rich’ Rousseau was originally referring to were rich people in power.

This design is a metaphor for reclaiming what is lost and for fighting the systemic powers that have caused such loss. Our crown design points to the monarch as a constitution that hoards wealth and as a symbol of colonisation and white opulence. As one of our founders is Lao, the chopsticks were chosen especially to symbolise the diaspora of Asian Americans. As an extension of this, we wanted to have the chopsticks act as a reminder of the ways in which many Indigenous groups world wide have had their resources and power stripped away from them due to colonisation and its power systems which often play architec to inequality and help uphold dynasties of billionaires. Hence, our chopsticks here are metaphorical tools for dismantling those systems.

It’s time to reclaim power. It’s time to salivate. It’s time to consume. It’s time to feast.

Let’s ‘eat the rich’.

When European explorers 'discovered' lands on the other continents, there were already people living there. All too often the explorers took the land away from the native or indigenous peoples and either killed them or suppressed them. In many cases, the native languages and cultures were suppressed and the natives were forced to adopt Western ways. Unfortunately, this isn't just a thing of the past -- many Indigenous Peoples and their cultures are still threatened today.

We decided to use the Māori flag in our design as the colours represent what Self Sovereignty stands for.

Black represents Te Korekore the realm of Potential Being. It represents the long darkness from where the world emerged. It represents the heavens, the male element us formless, floating and passive.

White represents Te Ao Marama, the realm of Being and Light. It is the Physical World. White symbolises purity, harmony, enlightenment, balance and air rising.\

The Koru, curling frond shape, represents the unfolding of new life, that everything is reborn and continues. It promises renewal and hope for the future.

Red represents Te Whei Ao, the realm of Coming into Being. It symbolises female, active, flashing, south, yelling, emergence, forests, land, gestation and spirals. Red is Papatuanuku, Earth Mother, the sustainer of all living things. Red is the colour of earth from which the first human was made.

The design represents the balance of natural forces with each other. To live life is to live with nature. To appreciate life is to understand nature.

Designed by: Hiraina, Jan, and Linda 1990

Made of thicker, heavier cotton, but still soft and comfy. And the double stitching on the neckline and sleeves add more durability to keep the quality high!

Size Guideline: I'm 5'3, 130lbs and I wear a medium for a loose fit, and a small for a tighter fit.

Please make sure you choose the right size as we can only refund or exchange an item if it's damaged. Thank you.
