NEW! Refugee Raised Crewneck Tee

Regular price $30.00
/
Shipping calculated at checkout.

This is the shirt to wear if you have been raised by refugees. Raised by the resilience, love, grit and promise of parents or carers who had to leave their known for the unknown. And, with it, had to adapt to new culture, language, food and life. This is the shirt to wear if you are proud of your refugee heritage or being part of a migrant story. This is a thank you to our refugee raisers; a visual paean to the ones that whispered dreams in mother tongues, the ones that sang us lullabies; song stories of home, the ones that fed us rice, sauces, foods from lands they had to leave. This shirt is a statement about how refugee mothers, fathers, siblings, aunties, uncles and carers have raised us up - some with little to no resources - relying on stories, love and heart. This is a thank you to the refugees who raised us and made us, us.

The inspiration from this design comes from my grandmother who crossed the Mekong river to bring her family, including my mom, to safety. The Secret War in Laos brought death and destruction to their hometown so they fled to Thailand to seek refuge. Months later, they were all flown to the US and arrived in 1976.

Eat The Rich Crewneck Tee

Regular price $30.00
/
Shipping calculated at checkout.

Eat the rich is an abbreviation of Jean Jacques Rousseau’s words “When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.”

But today it’s a slogan that asks us to consider wealth inequalities of our contemporary era and more commonly used as an anti-capitalist rallying cry. The ‘rich’ Rousseau was originally referring to were rich people in power.

This design is a metaphor for reclaiming what is lost and for fighting the systemic powers that have caused such loss. Our crown design points to the monarch as a constitution that hoards wealth and as a symbol of colonisation and white opulence. As one of our founders is Lao, the chopsticks were chosen especially to symbolise the diaspora of Asian Americans. As an extension of this, we wanted to have the chopsticks act as a reminder of the ways in which many Indigenous groups world wide have had their resources and power stripped away from them due to colonisation and its power systems which often play architec to inequality and help uphold dynasties of billionaires. Hence, our chopsticks here are metaphorical tools for dismantling those systems.

It’s time to reclaim power. It’s time to salivate. It’s time to consume. It’s time to feast.

Let’s ‘eat the rich’.

Matter Is The Minimum Tee (New Colours!)

Regular price $30.00
/
Shipping calculated at checkout.

When we say Black lives matter, Trans lives matter and Indigenous lives matter, we mean this. However, matter is the minimum. We need to move beyond the minimum and behave in anti-racist, anti-transphobic and anti-homophobic ways. This means more than just wearing a shirt of course. However we believe it's a good place to start. We personally have learned a lot through many activists in these spaces and one we really like is Ibram X. Kendi. You can find a link to his text below.

A message from our community:

"At the rallies I’ve been to lately for black lives, a lot of us have started using the chant and painting signs that say “matter is the minimum”. I was wondering if you guys could do something with that statement on a shirt or sweatshirt. I think the sentiment behind it, that matter is the baseline and more care and validation needs to happen, is really valuable and really gets the message across that we will not stop at just acknowledging and accepting ones existence in society but rather we are looking for liberation."

When European explorers 'discovered' lands on the other continents, there were already people living there. All too often the explorers took the land away from the native or indigenous peoples and either killed them or suppressed them. In many cases, the native languages and cultures were suppressed and the natives were forced to adopt Western ways. Unfortunately, this isn't just a thing of the past -- many Indigenous Peoples and their cultures are still threatened today.

We decided to use the Māori flag in our design as the colours represent what Self Sovereignty stands for.

Black represents Te Korekore the realm of Potential Being. It represents the long darkness from where the world emerged. It represents the heavens, the male element us formless, floating and passive.

White represents Te Ao Marama, the realm of Being and Light. It is the Physical World. White symbolises purity, harmony, enlightenment, balance and air rising.\

The Koru, curling frond shape, represents the unfolding of new life, that everything is reborn and continues. It promises renewal and hope for the future.

Red represents Te Whei Ao, the realm of Coming into Being. It symbolises female, active, flashing, south, yelling, emergence, forests, land, gestation and spirals. Red is Papatuanuku, Earth Mother, the sustainer of all living things. Red is the colour of earth from which the first human was made.

The design represents the balance of natural forces with each other. To live life is to live with nature. To appreciate life is to understand nature.

Marsha P. Johnson's trailblazing involvement in LGBTQIA+ rights helps us see her as an instigator of change and someone whose legacy we can continue through our words and actions. NEW! Dispel The Model Minority Myth Sweatshirt

What is the model minority myth?
The myth of the model minority is based on stereotypes. It perpetuates a narrative in which Asian American children are whiz kids or musical geniuses. Within the myth of the model minority, moms force children to work harder and be better than everyone else, while nerdy, effeminate dads hold prestigious—but not leadership—positions in industries like medicine and accounting. This myth characterizes Asian Americans as a polite, law-abiding group who have achieved a higher level of success than the general population through some combination of innate talent and pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps immigrant striving.

What's so bad about it?
While most people agree that negative stereotypes of Asian Americans are harmful, some still question the harm of the model minority myth. What could be so bad about being part of a group that’s seen as being successful? Like all stereotypes, the model minority myth erases the differences among individuals. The model minority myth operates alongside the myth of Asian Americans as perpetual foreigners. The model minority myth is just one of a collection of stereotypes about Asian American people. Popular television and films exoticize Asian culture and peoples. If you’re a man, you’re a kung fu master. If you’re a woman, you’re a submissive sex object. If you’re gender non-binary or transgender, you don’t exist at all. Mickey Rooney’s racist portrayal in Breakfast at Tiffany’s lives in our collective imagination alongside every East or South Asian actor who has played a bit part as a humorless doctor or IT guy.

When we decolonise, we start with a colonised environment or space and attempt to revert it back to its Indigenous scaffold. However, what if we did more. What if we flooded colonised spaces with Indigenous knowledge. Or better still, what if the blueprint itself was indigenised. Think of it this way, by the time we have to 'DEcolonise' something, it's too late. By the time you have to DEtonate a bomb, it's too late. Let's instead work to indigenise our thoughts, our spaces and our work. The concept of decolonising relays on centring of the colonist; it centres colonisation. It's even in the word 'deCOLONISE'. However, 'Indigenise' centres the Indigenous Peoples and their kaupapa. 'Indigenise' is about creating, not subtracting. That's where we're heading.

The negative connotations surrounding the word 'protest' don't fit with our kaupapa/mission. We are not protesters, we are protectors. We want to protect the water, the earth, human kind and our environment. We want to protect languages, cultures and mana. We want to protect ancestral knowledge and we want to protect our future generations.
