Eat the rich is an abbreviation of Jean Jacques Rousseau’s words “When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.”
But today it’s a slogan that asks us to consider wealth inequalities of our contemporary era and more commonly used as an anti-capitalist rallying cry. The ‘rich’ Rousseau was originally referring to were rich people in power.
This design is a metaphor for reclaiming what is lost and for fighting the systemic powers that have caused such loss. Our crown design points to the monarch as a constitution that hoards wealth and as a symbol of colonisation and white opulence. As one of our founders is Lao, the chopsticks were chosen especially to symbolise the diaspora of Asian Americans. As an extension of this, we wanted to have the chopsticks act as a reminder of the ways in which many Indigenous groups world wide have had their resources and power stripped away from them due to colonisation and its power systems which often play architec to inequality and help uphold dynasties of billionaires. Hence, our chopsticks here are metaphorical tools for dismantling those systems.
It’s time to reclaim power. It’s time to salivate. It’s time to consume. It’s time to feast.
Let’s ‘eat the rich’.
