When we decolonise we start with a colonised environment or space and attempt to revert it back to its Indigenous scaffold. However, what if we did more. What if we flooded colonised spaces with Indigenous knowledge. Or better still, what if the blueprint itself was indigenised. Think of it this way, by the time we have to 'DEcolonise' something, it's too late. By the time you have to DEtonate a bomb, it's too late. Let's instead work to indigenise our thoughts, our spaces and our work. The concept of decolonising relays on centring of the colonist; it centres colonisation. It's even in the word 'deCOLONISE'. However, 'Indigenise' centres the Indigenous Peoples and their kaupapa. 'Indigenise' is about creating, not subtracting. That's where we're heading.

When European explorers 'discovered' lands on the other continents, there were already people living there. All too often the explorers took the land away from the native or indigenous peoples and either killed them or suppressed them. In many cases, the native languages and cultures were suppressed and the natives were forced to adopt Western ways. Unfortunately, this isn't just a thing of the past -- many Indigenous Peoples and their cultures are still threatened today.

When we say Black lives matter, Trans lives matter and Indigenous lives matter, we mean this. However, matter is the minimum. We need to move beyond the minimum and behave in anti-racist, anti-transphobic and anti-homophobic ways. This means more than just wearing a shirt, of course. However, we believe it's a good place to start. We personally have learned a lot through many activists in these spaces and one we really like is Ibram X. Kendi. I think the sentiment behind it, that matter is the baseline and more care and validation needs to happen, is really valuable and really gets the message across that we will not stop at just acknowledging and accepting ones existence in society but rather we are looking for liberation."
